Jason and I braved the arctic tundra of Minnesota and headed out for some French fries. When I was in college, I remember going to White Castle for late night munchies. However, they don’t have White Castle in Miami, so it has been a while since I have been to one. I have so many fond memories of White Castle from my formative years, that I thought a French Read the rest of this entry »

Hash Browns at Nathan’s Famous Restaurant in the Fort Lauderdale Airport
I was at the airport very early in the morning for a flight to Minnesota for the holidays. There was a Nathan’s Famous restaurant pretty close to my gate. I have heard from several sources that I must try their French fries. However, it was not my lucky day. I was there way too early in the morning, so I had to settle for a hash brown. I was able to eat fried potatoes so I wasn’t about to Read the rest of this entry »
Washington State Potato Commision: The 60 Day Potato Challenge with Chris Voigt
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to eat nothing but potatoes for 60 days? Well there is now one man who can give you a firsthand account of his 60-day potato eating experience. Chris Voigt, who is the Executive Director of the Washington State Potato Commission, has spent a total of 15 years in the potato industry, working for both state and national potato organizations. I can tell you all about Chris, but I thought it is best to let him explain his experience in his own words.
FFF: Can you tell me a little bit about your 60-day potato diet?
Chris Voigt: I ate 20 potatoes a day for 60 days straight. No traditional toppings like sour cream, chili, cheese, or butter, only seasonings and oil for some of the cooking. The intent of the diet was to remind people that the potato is so good for you, that you could literally live off them for 60 days, without any negative impact to your health. That’s why I wasn’t able to use any toppings other than seasonings. I couldn’t use anything that would add any substantial nutrition since I was trying to prove that the potato was nutritious just by itself. I started on October 1st and completed my 60 days on November 30th. I would like to say that I’m not encouraging anyone to follow in my footsteps. This is not the next fad diet but was simply a bold statement to remind the public that there is a lot of nutrition in a potato. I recognize that there is no one single food product that can meet all of your nutritional needs, but if you had to pick one, the potato would be a good choice.
FFF: What gave you the idea to eat nothing but potatoes for 60 days?
Chris Voigt: It seemed like potatoes, French fries, and potato chips were being blamed for everything that was bad in the world. I woke up one morning, feeling beat up about the image of the potato and decided to do something about it. I thought of the movie, “Stand by Me”. There is a scene in the movie where these boys are camping out and are having one of those great conversations around the camp fire that only little boys can have. One of the boys asks, “If you could only have one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?” In the movie, he says Cherry flavored Pez, but I chose potatoes. I thought if I commit to a diet only of potatoes, then I could show the world how healthy they really are. Read the rest of this entry »
French Fries at Goombay Marketplace at the Nassau Airport
I love Rum Cay in the Bahamas with all of my heart. There are only 50 people living on 45 square miles of paradise. The waters are turquoise and warm, even in December. The salt ponds are amazing and I even had some time to myself where I was surrounded by warm water on my own tropical island.
The best part of the trip was meeting a group of adventure enthusiasts who were on the island to go surfing, paddle boarding, fishing, kite boarding and most importantly skydiving. It was super fun…
I also acquired a taste for Goombay Punch – the local soda. There are 54 grams of sugar in that bad boy, so it Read the rest of this entry »
Woman Suing McDonald’s for Marketing Happy Meals to Children
I recently read an article in the LA Times about a mother suing McDonald’s for marketing Happy Meals to children. This lady has WAY too much time on her hands. If you don’t want your children eating Happy Meals, then tell your children no. It’s as simple as that.
She is suing them because the toys offered in Happy Meals appeal to kids. Why isn’t she suing candy companies for making the sweets brightly colored? Does she know a number of manufacturer’s produce food modeled after cartoon characters? The point is there are always going to be unhealthy Read the rest of this entry »
Feeding Sharks French Fries in the Bahamas – Shark Attack!
Have you ever wondered if sharks would eat French fries? I wondered the same thing, so I thought that I would put this to the test. I made little fish and chips concoction and headed to shark infested waters to test my theory. As it turns out, sharks love French fries. Thank goodness they don’t love toes because the sharks got a little too close to my feet…
Thanks to Bobby Little at Sumner Point Marina. I really enjoyed my time on the secluded island of Rum Cay in the Bahamas. Read the rest of this entry »

Waffle Fries at Wendy’s in Nassau
I was on my way to Rum Cay in the Bahamas and we got stuck in Nassau for a couple hours. We booked our second flight out of Nassau on Pineapple Air to get to Rum Cay. Some random guy booked a flight at 1 p.m., so they were waiting around for him. I was with a group of 14. One would think they would just tell the single guy trying to book a flight that he needed to be there earlier, but that is not how people in the
Bahamas roll. I don’t get it either.
What is there to do in the Nassau airport? Well the answer is easy… nothing. Like I said, I was with a group of 14. The majority of the group was going down to Rum Cay to go skydiving. The rest of us were going to go surfing, paddle boarding, fishing and diving. Since we had the long layover, we thought about
Roasted Potatoes at Joey’s Italian Cafe in Wynwood
Tania and I were shopping at Target and we quickly built up an insatiable hunger. There were a gazillion people at Target and deals everywhere we turned. Our quick trip to Target turned out to be quite the adventure.
Since we were out and about, we decided to explore the Wynwood area for lunch. We don’t get out that way very often unless we are heading to Target. It’s a shame we don’t go there more often because there are so many
great restaurants in this part of Miami. This particular day we stopped at Joey’s, which is an Italian Café Read the rest of this entry »
Questions about French Fries and Potatoes with Stunt Tater
Recently, I have been reading a lot about a new potato character in town, Stunt Tater! He reigns from Idaho and has taken the potato world by storm. I was lucky enough to catch up with him to get some insight into his antics.
FFF: Where did you grow up?
Stunt Tater: As you may know, potatoes grow from cut pieces of potato called seeds, and each piece of potato that has an “eye” is potentially a Tater Tot. I grew up on the Eastern side of Idaho, outside a town called Idaho Falls. I was 120 days old when a farmer harvested me and rather than end up being cut into a French fry, I snuck off the truck and have been running ever since. You can’t call me a “couch potato” because I get plenty of exercise.
FFF: What is your day job?
Stunt Tater: During the daytime I try to help my buddy Dr. Potato answer questions that chefs and Read the rest of this entry »
