I haven’t spent too much time in Alabama, but recently I had the rare opportunity to drive through the state. You may be asking yourself why I would be driving through Alabama when I am a South Florida resident. I was asking myself the same question when I saw nothing but Sonny’s BBQ, Waffle House and Wal-Mart on every single corner. Soon afterwards, I saw a truck with fake testicles hanging from the from the trailer hitch…. Classy.
So, Jason and I were in search of a place to eat. We rolled into Greenville, Alabama and pulled up to Hook’s Bar-B-Q. It was perfect. It looked like a place that only locals would go. This is exactly what Jason and I were searching for because we wanted to get a real feel for Alabama.
Jason ordered some meat dish with French fries. I ordered potato salad and sweet potato fries. When our order
arrived, I couldn’t wait to chow down. I was starving.
I ate one of Jason’s French fries that came with his meal. They were just normal crinkle cut French fries. They were not extra crispy or extra hot. They were just average French fries. Next, I tried the sweet potato fries. They were crispy and salted. They were hot, so that was good. They were not off-the-charts amazing, but they were good. The real gem at Hook’s BBQ was the potato salad. I can honestly say that the potato salad at Hook’s is the best potato salad I have ever had in my life. I was so glad that we found Hook’s BBQ. I still don’t know how we found it. Not only was it off the beaten path, but it was around the corner, across the tracks and we had to climb up hill both ways just to get there.
We left Greenville and headed toward Florida. I thought that Greenville was out in the middle of nowhere. I was wrong. Greenville is definitely somewhere. Jason and I headed into parts of Alabama that I don’t think more than a handful of people know exist. There
were no lights and it was dark. We passed over Murder Creek and within 10 miles we passed by Last Chance Road. WTF? Who names these places? That is just wrong…
The good news is that we arrived at our destination safely. The even better news is that our tummies were full from delicious food at Hook’s BBQ.

I went through and ate at Hooks BBQ in greenville. I wanted a good hot meal and got microwaved tuff ribs that I wouldnt have given my dog. When you walk in you can clearly see the kitchen area through a window thats between the cashiers and the cooks. I watched as my meal was being prepared. Microwaves and bare hands. I didnt see a glove on not one person working in the kitchen. Bottom line, I wouldnt go back to another Hooks anywhere, its ruined my whole bbq experience!
I don’t eat meat, so I can’t comment on the BBQ. From your descriptions, maybe I am glad I didn’t try the meat. I can’t believe they microwave it. That is too bad…
The potato salad was good though.
