Fort Lauderdale: Ale House… I almost didn’t get my French Fries

alehouse2I love my life. I work from home and I rarely ever have to be anywhere. I can work when I want to work and play when I want to play. Every once in a while I have to show up to a meeting. I am not going to lie – I get excited! Besides my friend time, I spend my workdays by myself hanging out with my cats. Even when I hang out with my friends, I rarely leave South Beach. You would think that journey across the bridge to the mainland would be as difficult as going across the country. It’s not just me… most people here who live and work on the beach rarely leave their comfort zone. Even though I am pretty new here, I have easily fallen into the category of South Beach hermit.

So, this day was special. Not only was I leaving the beach, but I was going to a meeting for work. That’s right… killing two birds with one stone. I even put on a smidgeon of makeup! Big day… Read the rest of this entry »

quickies8I am really excited for Nov. 21, which marks a day that will go down in history. Actually, all days go down in history, but this one is special. My friend, the Burger Beast, will attempt to eat a four-pound hamburger at Quickie’s Burgers and Wings. When the Burger Beast first told me about his endeavor, I didn’t understand the magnitude of the challenge he was about to take on! This news is so huge that the Miami Herald even featured the story this week. I went with the Burger Beast and a couple of his friends to Quickie’s to check out the size of the burger that he is going to attempt to put in his belly. When the burger arrived, my jaw hit the floor. I believe that an entire cow was killed just for this moment of gluttony. A vegetarian in a carnivore’s paradise… I just decided to order fries. Yolo, French Fries and Truffled Yolo Chips

I know that this might come as a shock, but my day job is not a French fry blogger. I know that you must think millions of dollars can be made from such a fantastic idea, but alas, I also have a day job. You ready for the ironic part of my day job? I am a freelance writer who focuses on health, nutrition and the environment. What am I doing writing about yolo1French fries? Well, I eat so many vegetables and other things that are good for me, that I have to satisfy the part of me that just wants to eat junk food. I don’t like sweets, so chocolate wouldn’t work. I don’t eat meat, so that cuts out a whole food group of treats that are bad for me. I found a love for fried potatoes and have fixated on that craving for years.

I was absolutely delighted when my boss, Jeff, from one of the companies that I work for suggested that we talk about business over some French fries. Mix work and French fries? Jeff’s likeability went up about 10 notches. We chose Yolo, which is a fantastic restaurant off of Read the rest of this entry »

wayward sailorMy French fry adventures started out as a silly way for my friends and family to keep up with me. I have lived in nine states and also had a short stint in Hong Kong, so I have made friends from around the world and this has been a great way for everyone to see what I am doing. Little did I know that this blog would open the doors to a whole new set of friends and fun!

I joined the Burger Beast, who is obviously an expert on burgers, for a little rendezvous with other local bloggers. The world-renowned pizza expert from the Worst Pizza also joined the excursion. To top it all off, the hops and barley expert from the South Florida Beer Blog came along for an evening of food, drinks and laughs. All of my dreams! Read the rest of this entry »

The Battle of the Fries at Rosie’s

small3The rain finally stopped, and I drove up to Fort Lauderdale to see my friend who is visiting from the northeast. I lived in Fort Lauderdale once upon a time for about two months and I did absolutely nothing other than lay out by the pool and go to the gym. During this time, I met Ken, who also did nothing but lay out at the pool and go to the gym. I adore him.

I am also lucky enough to have a Dennis in my life, who is a good friend Read the rest of this entry »

Gambling and French Fries…. I Have a Fun Life.

red lobsterAfter we enjoyed beer and fries at the German restaurant, Steven and I decided to spend the day doing random stuff. We ended up at the Hard Rock Casino. I lost a whopping $20, but Steven won a little bit of money. Go Steven!

After my monetary setback, we headed over to Tequila Ranch because I heard a rumor that there was a mechanical bull there. We walked in and I saw the bull in all its glory. My heart started racing and my excitement Read the rest of this entry »

5935_123194674635_647684635_2245755_3449378_nAs soon as I heard about the Burger Beast, I knew I had to get to know him! The French Fry Fairy meets the Burger Beast – I can envision the movie now. Of course, we might be the only ones who actually want to see it.  As it turns out, the Beast has been rating burgers for about a year with his friends, and I was lucky enough to join the group on an excursion to Tom Jenkins BBQ in Fort Lauderdale.

Vegetarians and barbeque restaurants are not usually a good mix, but I was a sport and showed up eager to try the French fries. There was not much on the menu that I was able to eat so I ordered a corn muffin and fries and began to chow down. I don’t actually think they served burgers , but there was plenty of charred carcass to go around. Not my thing… However, I can respect that the meat did smell delicious and everyone really seemed to enjoy their food. Read the rest of this entry »

Today I had lunch with one of my dear friends, Steven. We decided to eat at Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill in Fort Lauderdale. There was really no point in looking at the menu because Steven said they had sweet potato fries.  I stopped listening to everything else after he muttered those heavenly words and I couldn’t think straight again until the fries arrived.

Sweet potato fries are really hit or miss. I think they might take a little bit longer to cook than conventional fries because often times they come out as an undercooked disaster.  However, when sweet potatoes are fried correctly, the world should stop moving and marvel in their greatness. As the waiter approached the table with my basket of fries, I saw the steam billow from the perfectly cooked meal I was about to eat. Hallelujah. Read the rest of this entry »
