We drove up to Gilbert, Minnesota for the day. Gilbert is a small town in northern Minnesota about 100 miles south of Canada. The town has a population of about 1,800. You might wonder what you would do in a town of 1,800 people in northern Minnesota. Well, the answer is you drink. That’s about it. There are about 15 bars to wet your whistle in Gilbert, which makes perfect sense in a town so small.
My mother, my aunt, my sister, my sister’s boyfriend and I all went to a little restaurant called the Wandering Pines. It was a cute little place built in a log cabin that was just adorable.
The restaurant was located right next to Knotty Pine Liquor Store. How perfect! In case you are not in the mood to drink at one of the million bars, you can pick up some alcohol to drink at home. This was my kind of town. I think there might be more alcohol in the town Read the rest of this entry »
I was so excited to go to Minnesota. It had been a year and a half since I had been in Minnesota to see my family and friends. My sister picked me up from the airport and we headed straight to the Mall of America to meet up with mom and brother. Unfortunately, my
father was still in Texas so we didn’t see him … sniff sniff.
So, I begged my brother, sister and mother to ride the roller coasters with me that are in the center of the mall. After I was turned down by all three of them, I pouted, but that didn’t do any good. Ahhhh…. pre-winter in Minnesota where the sky turns dark at 5:00 PM, you trade in your flip-flops for boots and start to think about bulking up for the actual winter months. Okay, so ‘bulking’ up might sound bad to those in the warmer regions but I am telling you people, it gets seriously cold here and a little extra plump helps to keep you insulated against the bitter wind chills.
One of the best things about living in Minnesota is the strong Irish influence. With that comes some great Guinness, awesome St. Patty’s Day Parties, and lots of local Irish Pubs. Sarah and I decided to meet for a little Happy Hour action at a fun local Irish hot spot, Shamrock’s in Saint Paul. Neither of us knowing what life changing food experience awaited us (alright, so life changing might be a bit high drama but I am a Drama Queen so just deal).
It was Hockey Night in St. Paul so the place quickly grew crowded. We were fortunate though as we had a table which afforded us a nice spot to sit and sip beers, and the best people watching we had encountered in a long time.
