French Fries at Books & Books

I feel that today was one of the most important days of my life as I began the pursuit for the best French fries. The evening began with a twilight bike ride through the heart of South Beach with my favorite neighbor, Eddie. Although his enthusiasm for fries doesn’t quite measure up to my overzealous passion, he made an excellent partner in my fried potato quest.

As we approached Lincoln Road, the bike ride came to end. We arrived at Books and Books and as it turns out, they not only had books, but they also had fries. Hooray! As a matter of fact, we were given the option between sweet potato fries or regular fries for a mere $3.95 each. I wanted to order both, but instead we decided on the regular fries. Sweet potato fries happen to be my favorite, but the robust flavor might have been a little too sassy for my first review. The French fries arrived with a golden brown color, so we knew they were fresh out of the fryer. Fries are just a little bit tastier with a little bit of the potato skin, so this was an unexpected pleasure that Books and Books offered as a surprise. These fries definitely had potential. The first bite was delicious. The fry was hot with a nice texture and a good amount of salt.

The French Fry Fairy eating French Fries!

Really good French fries have just a little bit of crunch to them. Not a potato chip crunch, but an ever-so-slight crunch that pleases your senses as you bite down into the perfect fry. As I chewed, swallowed and enjoyed the crunch, my tummy smiled.

We pondered over the look, smell, feel and taste for quite a while as we ran through a list of adjectives that defined the fries we were enjoying. However, Eddie said it best when he pronounced with clear certainty, “These fries are good.”Eddie

From that point forward, we quit talking and just ate. We continued to gobble down every last fry until only a few were left. Eddie revealed that his favorite French fries are the little tiny fries that get a little too crispy and he affectionately called them the “nectar” of French fries. I believe that is a beautiful way to describe and capture the essence of God’s gift to humans.
