South Beach: Smith and Wollensky, Sweet Potato Fries and Eddie the Neighbor

SMALL4Eddie the Neighbor and I decided to partake in a French fry adventure. It had been several weeks since our last excursion, and to be honest, I really missed our outings. Eddie picked me up on his bike and I rode on the handlebars the entire way. I laughed so hard that my stomach hurt and I felt like I was 12 years old. It was just like riding in the front car on a rollercoaster and I don’t think that I ever want travel another way again.   We rode to the southernmost point on South Beach and pulled up to Smith and Wollensky, which is kind of fancy schmancy place. We got a couple stares from people who were extremely jealous that they were not able to ride on the handlebars of their favorite neighbor’s bike.

SMALL2Eddie the neighbor is a favorite patron of Smith and Wollensky, so the bartender was extremely nice and eager to present us with the sweet potato fries that we ordered. Supposedly, these are a favorite of many locals, but I had to give the French Fry Fairy approval.

The fries arrived and immediately I knew that they were not going to get a much coveted fairy and neighbor thumbs up. I have only had the skinny sweet potato fries, but these sweet potatoes were steak fries and not thoroughly cooked. They were downright soggy. They weren’t awful by any means, but the centers tasted like a baked potato and they were just a little floppy and lukewarm for our taste.SMALL

However, they did come with mayonnaise that was seasoned with garlic and Eddie the neighbor said, “The mayonnaise is the savior of these fries.” That was a very true statement. The fries were not phenomenal, but the mayonnaise was what really kept us eating.

SMALL3Some other locals informed us that the regular fries are top notch and since this place is so close to our house, I am willing to give Smith and Wollensky another shot.

French Fry Fairy Advice: Always treat people how you would like to be treated  and even if it is not easy – it is the right thing to do.
