Today I had lunch with one of my dear friends, Steven. We decided to eat at Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill in Fort Lauderdale. There was really no point in looking at the menu because Steven said they had sweet potato fries. I stopped listening to everything else after he muttered those heavenly words and I couldn’t think straight again until the fries arrived.
Sweet potato fries are really hit or miss. I think they might take a little bit longer to cook than conventional fries because often times they come out as an undercooked disaster. However, when sweet potatoes are fried correctly, the world should stop moving and marvel in their greatness. As the waiter approached the table with my basket of fries, I saw the steam billow from the perfectly cooked meal I was about to eat. Hallelujah.

The sweet potato fries were perfect. Absolutely perfect! They were crispy, flavorful, and perfect to the point where I almost believed they melted in my mouth. The geniuses over at Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill sprinkled pepper and salt on the fries and I finished off the job with a few good dips in mayonnaise. Some people might not appreciate mayonnaise on fries because they think the condiment should be strictly used for sandwiches. That’s just crazy talk if you ask me. How do you think they make potato salad? Mayonnaise. So potatoes and mayonnaise really go together like cats and old ladies!
After basking in the delight that the sweet potato fries were bringing to my taste buds, I finally decided to ask Steven his opinion. I’m glad I did! He said that he
really hates when the fries are dry and that these fries were nice and moist. The word moist has never sat well with me, so I think I will translate what Steven was trying to say and describe these fries as having an excellent texture. The world should agree with Steven that dry fries are really gross. I will even go one step further and say dry fries are a COMPLETE waste of calories. Lucky for us, these fries were excellent to the core!

I have 2 questions:
First how many potatos on the potato scale do these fries get.
Second, who’s potato fries are better Gilberts or Fridays?
I just developed the potato scale today… I would say a 4.5
I haven’t eaten at a Fridays in years, but I can’t imagine that their fries even compare. However, I will try them out and let you know.
Good point about the potato salad, although I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a “sweet potato”..potato salad. Whelp, who cares, sweet potato fries are rad!
Thank you so much for your review! We really got a kick out of it here at the restaurant. Come back anytime. We would love to have you back.
