fries_thumbWine connoisseurs have the amazing ability to discern subtle, yet complex, flavors and aromas in wines from around the world.  My simple Midwest upbringing did not offer the opportunity to learn the art of twirling, swirling, smelling, tasting and spitting. Instead, I learned to appreciate the subtle differences in French fries. Not quite as sophisticated, but pretty close!

My French fry obsession began in my early 20s when I started traveling for work. Being a very picky eater, there were often very limited menu options available to vegetarians in some of the smaller towns that I had to visit. There was always the pasta option with watered down sauce or a side salad with wilted lettuce and fake cheese. Yum! The one thing I could always find that pleased my palate was French fries. By default I ended up consuming more potatoes than most would think humanly possible.

As the years passed by, I learned that there are French fries to avoid. Some restaurants’ fries are never fully cooked and some fries just never taste right. My friends have learned to share my affinity for fries, so I thought I should share my experiences with others who equally love the delicious and mildly nutritious fried potato. Delicious more than nutritious, but a girl can dream!

The perfect fries should always come out hot. They should be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Undercooked fries will go limp when dipping them in your favorite sauce and it’s annoying when half of your fry ends up in the side of ketchup. Nobody enjoys that experience, so the lesson today is a good fry is a sturdy fry!

Any carb-laden food tastes amazing the morning after a heavy night of drinking. Soggy cold fries are the only exception I have found. Although some people might disagree, I believe finding good French fries will really benefit humanity. This is my contribution to making the world a better place.

Tomorrow I will start my French fry adventures. I will recruit lucky participants to join me in this awesome endeavor, so stay tuned for the most awe-inspiring information you will probably receive in your lifetime.

French Fry Fairy Advice: The purpose of life is to bring happiness and joy to others around you, but most importantly to yourself. Everyone benefits from smiles and laughter!
